Author: Samantha Giblin Published: 16th January 2019 16:33

17 year old Jonathan Stevens who lives in Parkgate, is raising money for a school trip to Sierra Leone.

Jonathan is a Year 13 student at St Anselm's College and, each year, the school arranges an Immersion Trip to Makeni. St Anselm's has links with St Francis School and St Joseph's School for the Deaf. A group of students will work in the schools as well as experiencing life in Makeni and the capital Freetown. The students, accompanied by four members of staff, take resources with them for the schools, as well as medical equipment for local health services. Fundraising for the trip goes on both in and outside school.

Jonathan has so far raised sponsor money by completing a Three Peaks Challenge in Yorkshire, plus he has done bucket collections at concerts he participates in in Chester. He has also organised a music evening at school on Wednesday 23rd January at 7.30pm. Chester Big Band has agreed to play for the event. Tickets are £4 or £2 concessions (available from Little Actors, 26-30 Brook Street, Neston CH64 9XL. 0151 336 4302).

Jonathan hopes to carry out music activities with the children in Sierra Leone. He is an accomplished musician himself, as he has offers of places at both the Royal Northern College of Music and Trinity Laban College of Music to study for a BMus in Classical Trombone after his A levels this year. He plays in the Jan Modelski Community Orchestra, Chester Big Band, Chester Brass Band, Chester Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He is aware that music can have a huge impact on the lives of deaf children.

Also, school has asked for any old football shirts, as the children in Sierra Leone love their football. If anyone has any they could donate please drop them at Little Actors in Neston and they can be sent into St Anselm's for packing for the February 2019 trip.

Jonathan is a member of InterACT Youth Theatre in Neston, first as an actor and then in 2018 as the lighting operator for their shows. He volunteered for years with Little Actors working with the younger children and he recently appeared in Neston's Armistice Day Commemorations playing the Last Post in honour of the fallen of WW1.

If anyone would like to assist with fundraising for this life changing educational trip there is a Just Giving page here. On his return he would be happy to share his photos and experiences of life in a third world country with any supporters and interested parties.
