Willaston FC - Providing 115 Years of Football

There is a long proud history associated with Willaston village of encouraging inclusiveness and interaction with the youth in our community, socially and through sport.
It may be hard to imagine that 115 years ago the local farming community in Willaston were playing football and hockey behind the village church, and one day decided to start their own Football Club. Naming it Willaston Wasps FC, they kitted themselves out in a yellow and black striped kit. After several years Willaston Wasps FC moved to Overdale Road and then played next to the Old Vicarage. The club later relocated onto Smythy Lane until, in the mid 1930's, it finally moved to its present home at the excellent facilities on Johnston Recreation Ground in the centre of Willaston (see below).
Willaston Wasps FC was founded only 12 short years after Liverpool FC, and even though over the last 115 years Willaston FC have achieved slightly less honours on the pitch than Liverpool, our real success should be measured off the pitch. With the support of the local community, and through local people continuing to give up their time, Willaston FC has successfully managed to provide football for hundreds of adult and youth players of all ages, regardless of ability.
Partly in celebration of our 115th Anniversary, the current Willaston FC committee has put together an ambitious two year plan starting from next season 2019/20. They intend to develop the club to become one of an elite group of FA Community standard clubs with the capability to provide structured football sessions for both male and female footballers, in every age group from U5's right through to adult.
New FA qualified coaches have already been appointed to help establish these new capabilities and teams. In addition, grants have also been applied for to facilitate the delivery of football for players with a disability and these will help to provide any special equipment needed, and to make improvements to the current facilities.
We are currently re-designing our website and Twitter pages (@willastonfc) for the 2019/20 season. These will provide everybody with up to date details of our progress and the opportunities available to any prospective coaches, volunteers and players who may want to come along and be a part of one of the oldest community-serving football clubs in Cheshire and on the Wirral.
Should you be interested in becoming involved with Willaston FC either as a Coach or as a Player please contact us via our current website : https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/willastonfc.
The new website address will be published here once it goes live.
Can you recognise any of the players found in the club archives?
We have found a few archive photographs of some of the Willaston FC Football teams that played for our village through the years and thought it might be fun for you to try and recognise a relative or somebody you know.
