Town Centre Update - Issue 1
Introduction
Welcome to the very first issue of the Town Centre Update prepared by the borough council. It will be published regularly and displayed and distributed at key locations to give you information on the latest news regarding the town centre redevelopment. It will also be available here on AboutMyArea.
Archaeological dig starts soon
Developers will start preparing part of the Brook Street car park (see plan above) for an archaeological dig from approximately 26 January 2009. Then, from 6 February 2009, a specialist company, AOC, will begin the archaeological dig itself. The dig is expected to last for around 10 weeks.
This means that there will be no parking on the Brook Street car park but the council is maintaining a pedestrian route from the Raby Road car park to the Town Hall and Brook Street. There will be vehicular access to the Raby Road Car Park from Brook Street (via the access adjoining the Sorting Office) and Raby Road (See plan above).
The dig will ensure that any items of archaeological interest are recorded before the development starts.
Temporary Market move
The Friday market will now be held on a different part of the town's main car park while the archaeological dig is carried out. The market has been relocated to the Raby Road section of the car park behind Neston Town Hall from its usual site near the car park's Brook Street entrance. (See plan above).
The Friday market will continue to operate as normal during the 10-week dig, along with the monthly Farmer's Market, which trades on the 3rd Saturday of each month. When work begins on the land behind the town hall and both the Brook Street and Raby Road Car Parks, the market will move from the Raby Road part of the car park to Belmont Cottage and Brook Street.
Update on Traffic Order consultation
Thank you to everyone who has made comments on the recent Traffic Orders proposed to control areas of car parking. A full summary of your views will be presented to the Highways Committee on 27 January 2009.
It is very important that during the redevelopment of the town centre shoppers do not experience difficulty in parking. The proposals were based on advice from independent parking consultants. It is proposed to make the Chester Road car park a maximum three-hour stay with long stay provision for car parking provided by the British Legion, Malt Shovel, Station Road, and the Library.
