The Best Guide for the Neston Area

Do you recognise these locations?

Our regular contributor of photos for the Days Gone By section, Councillor Andy Williams, is asking for help in identifying two locations.

Both pictures are thought to originate from around 1907. The first picture (below) is captioned "The Church Footpath, Neston, Cheshire."  Do you know exactly where this footpath was?

In the second photograph, a large house is pictured and captioned "The Woodlands, Neston." Again, does anyone know where this house was located?

many thanks to andy williams for submitting both of these photos.i have had a good look at both and the bottom photo(the woodlands)i think is off woodfall lane in little neston.as for the top photo(the church footpath) could that be a very early image of how the path from the back of church lane(leading to the church)once looked? great pics by the way andy!! nice one!!

I think your right on the woodlands one stan,i should know it as i used to play round there as a kid when my grandad lived at the top of bull hill but that church footpath is a puzzler

thanks for your comments andy.for some reason the woodlands photo just clicked with me and i knew it was off woodfall lane in little neston.with regards to the church footpath photo-only this afternoon i took a summer walk down to church lane and took a look at the path from the first set of gates(on church lane)-and i have to say it does seem familiar.remarkable photos though-and a real find.hope you can find some more!!

Cheers for that Stan,I have plenty of other pictures and if its ok with carrie i will see if i can get them put in the days gone by section.Theres an old gentleman Mr Millington who used to work with my grandad who is a fountain of knowledge on neston and he lived in a cottage by the old post office in burton as a child so has some fascinating stories of that area as well,he has helped me out with a few photos i've been stuck on before

We've received the following email in relation to this topic:

"I believe the Church footpath ran from Church lane along the side of the grave yard to the High Street next to what was a car park about 40 years ago when I was younger and lived in Neston. Its now house I believe.

The Woodlands was on the corner of Wood Lane and if I remember right my Grandparents house garden backed onto its land.

Andy Jones."

The latest email on the second picture is right. It's at the Neston end of Wood Lane (first left as you turn in from Neston), and is the house which gave its name to all the Wood aspects round there. The left-hand side of the house no longer exists and much of the land around it has been sold off over the years, although it is still a considerable plot. This shot would have been taken from what is now Leighton Park. I grew up in the house between about 1984 and 1995, although have not been back since. Very pleased to have come across the picture!
