When Did the White Horse in Neston Cease to be a Pub?

Author: Susan Chambers Published: 6th February 2013 08:52
I am revising the Neston Town Trail for Neston Civic Society.

The White Horse Pub, NestonThe Trail was created in the early 1980s and since more information has come to light over the years, it was decided to update the earlier version, and add some photographs.

One point of information that we need is - "When did the White Horse, on the Cross (to the left in the picture), stop being a pub?". It is difficult to pin down this date, so we wondered if any of the readers could shed some light on this?

The very old thatched White Horse was rebuilt in 1877 as the current building - did it last for a century as a public house?

My great grandfather ran the pub during the war 1939-45
His name was Ernest Bayley, and his wife was Margaret.
My father stayed there during the war with his mother and hid in the cellar when the air raids were on.
Ernest died around 1958 so he may have worked there until then. hope this is of some help maybe you can look on the 1911 census that may give you the landlords name at that time

You could ask the current occupant, or obtain from Land registry (£3 online) for a copy of the property title. Often these will include details of previous changes of ownership / restrictions etc. and so may, and I stress may, include details of when it was sold in the 60's or 70's.
