Council urges children to put their best feet forward

Author: M-e-h Published: 18th May 2009 16:15
Stockport Council is encouraging pupils to get together and take part in Walk to School Week which is taking place this week.

Stockport active

Walk to School Week is a national campaign which fits in with the Council's Active Stockport campaign which highlights the health benefits of exercise.

During Walk to School Month last October, up to 18,000 children from 77 of 92 Stockport primary schools put their best foot forward and joined thousands of schools throughout the world to highlight the health benefits of walking to school.

Jim McMahon, Service Director for Transport and Planning at Stockport
Council, said: "The Council is keen to work with schools to promote the
benefits of walking and cycling to school to improve pupils' health and help
tackle congestion and pollution. I hope the hard work that the pupils have
put into this project will encourage more children to find healthier
alternatives to get to school as it's a great way for them to fit in the
recommended 60 active minutes per day which is needed to keep them healthy.

"By encouraging schools to get involved in events like this we hope that
more initiatives such as 'walking buses' and 'Park and Stride' schemes will
reduce the amount of car journeys to schools.  Fewer cars on our local roads
will also help to improve road safety and reduce congestion and pollution
and also links in with the Stockport Boost campaign as it's a great way for
people to save money on petrol."

Involving people of all ages the Active Stockport campaign highlights the
many leisure facilities, parks and organised events within the borough
whilst encouraging people to take part in Council initiatives such as
Walkaday's led walks which take place throughout the year.

Active Stockport is a local campaign helping families fit more activity into
their daily lives. Stockport's campaign ties in perfectly with Change4Life,
the national initiative aimed at preventing people from becoming overweight
by encouraging them to eat better and move more to find out more visit
