Back to the future for 0161

Stockport Direct Contact Centre, part of Stockport Council, has responded to
feedback from local residents and is changing its current 0845 numbers to
local rate 0161 numbers.
Councillor Martin Candler with Tina Powell, Customer Services Representative at Stockport Direct Contact Centre.
The decision to change to 0161 numbers came as a result of comments about the increasing costs of dialling 08 numbers as some residents cannot include these numbers in mobile call packages. It is also a move favoured by OFCOM,
the UK's independent regulator of broadcasting, telecommunications and wireless communications sectors.
The Stockport Direct Contact Centre, which is the first port of call for a wide range of Council services from social care to traffic enquiries, can
still be contacted on the 0845 numbers until April 2010.
Councillor Martin Candler, Executive Member for Customer Focus, said: "This change enables us to provide the same highly reliable service for Stockport residents at a cheaper cost. It also shows we are committed to listening to
people's concerns and acting on them."
A full list of the new numbers is available online at
www.stockport.gov.uk/stockportdirect or in the July issue of The Review,
Stockport Council's free newspaper to all Stockport residents.
