Say what?!?

Were you a child who sat at the back of the classroom and cringed when the teacher questioned aloud "Does everyone understand?"?!. Possibly hiding behind a book and feeling slightly confused and somewhat unnerved? Donning a fake, yet reassuring, grin and a slightly wobbled nodding of the head? The teacher then continued and you were left further and further behind because you were too afraid to speak out? When you finally plucked up the guts to ask the teacher or perhaps waited till the end of the lesson for the teacher to explain it again, you either remained confused as you felt more pressure than ever to retort "Aaaah, I get it now!" Or, understood it for a mere minute but were far from consolidating it and independently applying it.
Many adults will be embarrassed to admit to this even now and therefore you can certainly imagine how many children 'secretly suffer'. Teaching has changed vastly since many of us were at school. As teachers know, lessons should be accessible to all pupils and be as visually, auditory and kinaesthetically executed as possible. However, children are not robots and undoubtedly, no matter how many songs, rhymes, pictures, videos or dances you deliver, you cannot guarantee that every child will grasp a concept the first, or even second time of teaching them it.
Sometimes in life we all need a bit of extra guidance and reassurance and that is ok! As parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, carers and so forth, keep telling children how fantastic they are and no matter how long it takes for that light bulb to shine and ping, THEY WILL GET THERE!
