How to look after your flowers when the weather is really hot.
When the temperature reaches 25 - 30 degrees as it has done recently, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep cut flowers in optimum condition. Some flowers open up fully very quickly when the temperature is warm thus reducing their vase life. The best way to care for your cut flowers when the temperature is high is to cut the stems diagonally before putting them in the vase of water with flower food added. This will expose a greater area of the stem to take up the water, then place the vase in a room with medium light conditions in a cool spot, not on the window ledge in the full glare of the sun. During this sort of weather, roses will blow open quickly and delicate flowers such as gypsophilla and golden rod dry out, so why not save these flowers for times when the temperature is more moderate and try a bouquet of exotics like anthurrium and liles or the glorious peony which enjoy the warmer climate. if your flowers have been delivered to you in an aqua pack, it is best to remove them from the original packaging after a couple of days. You should recut the stems and pull away any bruised leaves before placing place them in a fresh vase of water. Finally, remember that flowers are living things and that just like some of us, they wilt and get stressed when the weather gets too hot.
