Abacare supports #WeCareWeek

Published: 17th November 2020 09:48

AN AWARD-WINNING Welsh care company is supporting an awareness week (November 16 until 22, 2020) shining a light on what working in social care is really like.

Abacare, which is one of hundreds of businesses behind the WeCare Wales campaign, is supporting #WeCareWeek where carers will share experiences of their roles and how they started their careers.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at Abacare, which provides care across Wales, said: “We’re thrilled to be part of the WeCare Wales campaign, run by Social Care Wales, which works with employers to share all available job vacancies.

“This week (November 16 until 22) WeCare Wales is highlighting the care industry with #WeCareWeek via its social channels and website, highlighting the variety of jobs that are available in Wales.

“Care workers will share their experiences of how they started their career in care, what it’s like working in different roles and what they enjoy about working in the sector through www.wecare.wales/wecare-wales-week-2020 and people can also find out about career events and job vacancies, including positions at Abacare.

“We will also be joining in with the hashtag on our branch Facebook and Twitter pages and sharing stories from our carers, so people can get a real insight into what it is like to work in the industry.”

Abacare is listed as one of the social care employers that people interested in the industry can find out more about on www.wecare.wales so they can potentially join its team.

The campaign is a collaboration with Social Care Wales and leading organisations representing social care, early years and childcare in Wales, as well as other national bodies involved in job-seeking and careers advice.

It is part of a long-term strategy to develop the workforces in the care and health sectors over the next decade, to provide a high-quality, seamless service to the people of Wales.

The campaign highlights the breadth of career opportunities in care, from childminders and nursery practitioners to home care co-ordinators and care home managers.

The WeCare campaign aims to show the variety of roles and career progression opportunities available. By using real care workers, the campaign focuses on the challenges they face, as well as what makes their work rewarding and worthwhile.

The social care sector is under increasing pressure from an ageing population, and the current pandemic, to provide care to vulnerable individuals across the country.

Neil added: “There are currently thousands of people in the hospitality, leisure and retail industries who are facing unemployment and we, along with WeCare Wales, are urging them to consider transferring their skills to a long-term role in the care industry.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for. No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is given.

“We provide free, full training on a fast-track basis to make sure everyone we take on is ready. This includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period. The Government has also taken steps to ensure a quicker turnaround on DBS checks, so people can get into work quicker.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a change of career or someone who just fancies a bit of a change. Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.

We’re supporting our colleagues in the NHS wholeheartedly, as we do on a daily basis already, by providing invaluable care for those who need it at home.

“By maintaining their health at home, we’re helping keep them safe. We’re ensuring they take their prescribed medication and we’re caring for their physical and emotional well-being every day. All this helps prevent adding additional pressure on the NHS and its resources, which we know will be under considerable strain in the coming months.”
