More powerful than the knife ...

Author: AboutMyArea HeadOffice Published: 25th May 2009 22:22

"If you take away my knife or gun you will need to replace it with something more powerful."

'Boy X' was developed by Clifford Oliver and Carole Pluckrose with Jordan Barrett, Troy Glasgow, Tendayi Jembere and Lee Vassell - four young actors who have direct experience of the pressures and demands facing young people on gang dominated estates. Written for 12 to 16-year olds, 'Boy X' can be used as a powerful tool for opening up debate amongst young people.

The play has already been performed in front of various audiences including the Home Office and, more recently, in Arc Theatre's home at The Malthouse Studios, Barking, with an audience that included Neville Lawrence OBE, father of Stephen Lawrence, and Richard Taylor, father of Damilola Taylor.

At that performance, held to acknowledge Neville Lawrence as the new patron of the Arc Theatre, Neville spoke of his determination to prevent other parents from having to experience the pain that he had had to go through over the death of his son.

In particular, he wanted as many young people as possible to see 'Boy X', which powerfully depicts the senseless killing of young people: something that has become all too common in our communities.

Boy X

The characters and initial story ideas have been developed through workshops drawing upon real experiences of living on gang dominated estates.

'Boy X' is a story of hope, personal responsibility, imagination and the power to change
