Minehead AFC travel to Falmouth this week to renew a long standing cup rivalry with a cornish side who also have an impressive history in FA competitions. This particular meeting at Bickland Park, is in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase.
The rivalry began in 1967 when the two sides met at Irnham Road in an FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round tie which the Cornishmen won by two goals to one.
However, Minehead gained revenge in 1974 with a 1-0 win at Falmouth in the FA Trophy 1st Round Proper.
Honours returned to Cornwall in the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round when a second replay at Exeter City's ground was needed before Falmouth won 2-1, then Minehead regained the upper hand in 1976 winning an FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round Replay at Irnham Road 3-0.
Again the pendulum swung and the 77/78 season saw Falmouth victorious by the same scoreline in the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy. September 1991 saw Minehead again travel to Falmouth where they were beaten 2-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup then in October 1998 the clubs met at Irnham Road when Minehead redressed the balance with a 2-1 FA Vase 1st Round Proper victory.
Falmouth, once classed as Cornwall's finest club, are currently in 8th position in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division, one pyramid level higher than the Blues.
