Get allotment gardening questions answered by expert

Author: Cherry Pullinger Published: 6th May 2015 10:40

GREENFINGERED Cornish folk who want to learn more about allotment gardening are invited to ask an expert who will be at a garden centre in the county this month (May, 2015).

Neil Dixon, the South West Representative of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners will be at Trelawney@Wadebridge during its Grow Your Own (GYO) Fruit and Veg Weekend on May 16 and 17.

Neil said: “I’m thrilled to be visiting Trelawney@Wadebridge during its dedicated GYO event. I will be in the garden centre’s vegetable area from 10am until 4pm to answer any questions people might have about allotment gardening and growing their own fruit and veg at home.”

Neil has been growing and showing fruit and vegetables for more than 20 years. He is also the chairman for Plymouth in Bloom and helped to launch National Allotment Week, which takes place from August 10 until 16.

He was also part of the National Allotment Gardens Trust until 2012.

During the weekend there will be GYO-themed displays and staff will be on-hand to offer expert advice and help to any customers wanting to get started with growing their own fruit and veg at home.

Peter Burks, General Manager at the garden centre, explained: “We’re really looking forward to our GYO Fruit and Veg Weekend and hope lots of people come along to find out more. It’s great news that Neil is coming along as he is a real expert in the field and will be able to inspire people to try growing their own at home.

“We will also have fruit and veg-themed activities going on for children during the event, including drawing and fruit and veg identity games. Our restaurant will also be serving up some delicious themed dishes too.”

One of Cornwall’s largest garden centres, Trelawney@Wadebridge was originally launched in 1970 as a nursery.

The garden centre provides customers with a wide range of quality gardening products including plants, furniture, barbecues, gifts and food items. Its friendly and knowledgeable staff are on-hand to give visitors help and advice on all gardening matters. There is also a garden building and Elite Spa concession on-site.

Carriages Restaurant, which seats up to 240 customers, is situated next to the lake at Trelawney@Wadebridge. It serves hot and cold drinks, snacks, cakes, breakfasts, lunches, a daily carvery and children’s meals.

The GYO Fruit and Veg Weekend will take place at the garden centre on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 during normal garden centre opening hours.

Neil will be in the vegetable area of the garden centre on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 from 10am until 4pm.
