Bronze Medallist - Max Whitlock
Join In is aiming to increase participation in sport after the Olympics through increasing access to sports clubs around the country. The Join In Local Sport Weekend is on the 18th/19th August, which sees around 4,000 sports clubs around the country opening their doors for free and letting people try out the sports that have inspired them over the Olympics with specialist coaching.

To help promote Join In's aim of encouraging people to play sport they have been going round the country and speaking to the people who have inspired our athletes on to success. A video being shown at these events is of Louis Smith's coach which demonstrates what it has taken Louis Smith to get the silver and bronze he has achieved over the Games.

What Is Join In Local Sport?

'Join in Local Sport' has the specific aim of getting as many people as possible to turn up, take part and join in at their local sports facilities on 18th / 19th August - the first weekend between the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As part of promoting the weekend we are bringing Olympians and Paralympians back to the place where it began for them, so that we can highlight the role of local sports clubs in the making of champions. Steve will talk about starting out in the North East and the people who inspired him at the time.

Local sports groups will be able to take advantage of this unique moment, creating a shop window within their community for the opportunities there are for people inspired by the Games to help out, give time, support, watch or play sport.

Sport clubs across the UK know that London 2012 will generate unprecedented enthusiasm for sport in the UK. The 'Join In Weekend' will capture that enthusiasm and bring it back to the place it begins for all great champions - their local sports facilities.

The 'Join In Weekend' will enable clubs to convert this once in a lifetime wave of interest into help, support and membership from their local community.

Seb Coe, Chair of London 2012, said:

"We are really happy to support the ‘Join In' project, it is a great idea that means that thousands of people across the UK can turn up and take part in local sports just after the Olympic Games finishes.

Millions will be inspired by what they witness over the summer and I hope this creates opportunities in every community for people to join in their local sports clubs."

Phil Smith, Director of Sport, Sport England, said:

"The ‘Join In Weekend' is a great opportunity for sports clubs to showcase their work and get new people involved in all aspects of their activities. ‘Join in' will give clubs a great platform to harness people's enthusiasm for sport during a home Games."
