The Mary Rose - Finalist in the 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards!

Published: 26th July 2019 11:10

Since The National Lottery began in 1994, over £40 billion has been raised, with over 565,000 grants made to projects both large and small across the UK. The 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards is the search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects from five categories: Heritage Award, Sport Award Art, Culture and Film Award, Community and Charity Award & Sporting Legend.

The Mary Rose in Portsmouth has been chosen as one of the ten heritage sites across the UK to be a finalist in the 25th National Lottery Awards. British actor Hugh Bonneville spoke to Julian Clegg at BBC Radio Solent live from the Mary Rose this morning about the awards.

"Please, please, please vote for the Mary Rose in this nationwide competition."

"It is a competition of the best of the best, open to the public to vote and so I urge all your listeners to come down to the Mary Rose because it is amazing, and if you live in the area then there is no excuse not to have done so..."

Bonneville was given exclusive access to the Mary Rose and describes his trip to the museum: "The Mary Rose had over 10 million visitors and deservedly so; it's beautifully done, it's incredibly immersive... in the sense that the visitor really experiences the Tudor life and the 19,000 artefacts they have recovered from the sea bed to go alongside the hull that's been so beautifully conserved.

"I have followed the Mary Rose project from my student days right up until the present. It has been called, and I think quite rightly, ‘The Pompeii of Britain'- it is a snapshot of a
single moment in time when these 500 souls were lost on the ship. It is a very evocative experience and well worth it, from all points of view. From history, from conservation, archaeology... and it's a fantastic day out."

Voting is now open to the public, and closes at midnight on Wednesday 21st August 2019. Vote for The Mary Rose in the Heritage category via MaryRose.org/NLAMaryRose or by tweeting with the hashtag #NLAMaryRose. Every vote counts.

There are ten finalists per category, and the winner for each category will be selected by public vote, to win a prize total of £10,000. Bonneville says the prize money if awarded to the Mary Rose "will add to the visitor experience here in Portsmouth... Everybody, get on your computers and vote. Fly the flag for Portsmouth!"
Helen Bonser-Wilton, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose said "We are so honoured to have reached the finals of the 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards. The National Lottery grant the Mary Rose received, has done an immeasurable amount to support and conserve the Mary Rose- a true British icon- and also enabled us to open a museum which was truly transformational and brings in visitors from all around the world, especially the local community. With the National Lottery's support we have achieved so much and hope to achieve so much more. We would be absolutely thrilled if we were voted as the Nation's favourite heritage project."
