A St Neots Man will be swimming The Channel in August to raise money for Parkinsons.

Bryn Dymott from Loves Farm, St Neots will attempt to cross The Channel and has a slot between 16th & 24th August  depending on weather and sea conditions.  He is raising money for Parkinson's UK National research fund and the Parkinson's Huntingdonshire group.  

Bryn says 'Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson's.  Parkinson's UK is there to ensure that no-one has to face Parkinson's alone.

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition for which there is currently no cure.  Caused by a lack of the chemical 'dopamine' in the brain which helps to transmit the messages that control our movements. The three main symptons of Parkinson's are tremor, muscle rigidity or stiffness and slowness of movement.  On average people develop Parkinson's over the age of 50, but 1 in 20 of those diagnosed are under 40.  There are 136,000 people in the Uk with Parkinson's.

Parkinson's UK strives to be there for everyone affected by Parkinson's, through expert information and advice, by acting as a voice at both local and national level to ensure that people with Parkinson's have access to the best quality of care.  Also though their pioneering research to find a cure for Parkinson's symptoms.  Their work is totally dependent on voluntary donations and the generosity of their supporters, people like you and me.

It's official; medical passed, support boat, pilot, lead support crew booked and 6 hour qualifier passed.  Training is ongoing; in the last 3 months 185km (115 miles) of which 20.4km was in local rivers or Dover Harbour.  So, weather permitting and remaining fit, my swim is going to happen.  I am swimming the Channel because .... I think I can and I want to solo breaststroke.  I am raising funds for Parkinson's UK and I hope that many of you will find some way to support my efforts either in collection boxes at the One Leisure pool, at some Love's Farm events or through Philip Gibbs.  Or please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/BrynDymott

Nine people have crossed the English Channel swimming breaststroke 5 Brits, 3 Belgians and a German, since the first crossing by Capt Webb.  My quiet ambition for the last 5 years has been to join this exclusive group of long distance swimmers.  My intention then became whispered following 2 relay team crossings in 2010.  Last year my wife endorsed my selfish decision to give it a go, and this August we are off to Dover.

St Neots is a great place to prepare.  Every Saturday morning we swim in the Great Ouse near the road bridge and once the river reaches 10C and higher we will be swimming more often and covering longer distances.  Should you see any of us please do give us a wave and a shout of encouragement.  We will not be wearing wetsuits but we do swim with all-comers.  St Neots has an excellent reputation for river swimming because the Great Ouse is so clean, gently flowing and shallow at the river banks.

Even on the coldest day of the winter, 3 of us took to the water; air temp -10C, water temp 1.5C.  We broke the ice watched it float downstream then endured (not quite enjoyed) an 80m swim across the river and back.

Oh and a phrase that I read last week, that is probably relevant to us all in one way or another "Dedication is what you do, when no one else is watching".

Thanks for promoting my swim and so very fully supporting the St Neots Jubilee Duck Race in aid of Parkinson's UK. We are swimming every Saturday morning, Tuesday lunchtime and Tuesday evenings too. If anyone would like to join us for a dip, please do let me know. With or without wetsuits. We swim under the Outdoor Swimming Society guidance and each of us at our own risk. See their website for more information. In the last month a 17 year old through to a retired lady, recently mover into Eaton Socon, have joined us. Happy swimming
