Primary School Children Support Homelessness Crisis

Author: Redbrick Published: 23rd January 2018 09:43

As the homelessness crisis in the UK reaches an all time high, a group of primary school children from a leading Derbyshire independent school has raised £640 for the homeless charity ‘Shelter'.

Tara Bali, Sophie Cox and Francesca Chambers are all in Year 6 at Ockbrook School. Having witnessed the homelessness crisis first hand on the streets of Derbyshire, as well as hearing about it regularly in the national news, the three 11-year-old pupils decided to organise a ‘suitcase sale' fundraising event.

The girls explain: "Homeless people are out in the cold every day and night; we have a home to go to and food to eat every meal time, but they don't. So we decided to do something to raise money for the homeless charity Shelter.

"We asked our friends to bring in a small bag or suitcase of good-quality books, DVDs and toys that they didn't need anymore, as well as cakes and biscuits, to sell to help raise money. It was amazing how many helped out and we raised even more than we had dreamed possible! We just hope one day no one will have to sleep rough on the streets."

Tom Brooksby is headmaster at Ockbrook School. He adds: "Tara, Sophie and Francesca have shown great maturity around one of today's social injustices. They explained to their class teacher that they wanted to do something to help and took complete responsibility; from writing to pupils and parents to request donations, setting up the stalls on the day and working out the overall figure. The generosity of staff, parents and pupils was beyond words and I'm very proud of how our school community pulled together and dug deep to make this charitable contribution."

Ockbrook School is a 200 year old leading co-educational independent school located in rural Derbyshire and 11 miles from Nottingham. It caters for boys and girls aged two to 18, has its own nursery and thriving sixth form and offers weekly and full boarding for boys and girls from age 11.
