A little bit of Thailand in the centre of London

Published: 4th April 2020 08:27

In the 2011 census, it was reported that almost 40,000 Thai-born citizens reside in the UK. This had risen from just 16,250 in 2001, so it is reasonable to assume that the figure today stands at well over 60,000. There are active and vibrant Thai communities across the UK, in cities such as Manchester, Edinburgh and Sheffield. But by far the largest Thai population is in the capital.

Enjoying Thai culture in London

Whether you are of Thai origin yourself or you simply want to enjoy a small taste of Bangkok without sitting on a plane for 12 hours, central London has a lot to offer. Here, we visit three of Central London’s most popular Thai nightspots.

Before we start, it is worth remembering that during the period that the city’s bars and restaurants are closed, the miracles of cyberspace can still bring the spirit of Thailand to your PC or smartphone. Whether you want to find the best Thai casino site to learn about Thai casino online and swot up on casino game rules or perhaps take a virtual tour of Bangkok, it is all there if you know where to look.

Thai Square and the TSQ Club

Located on Cockspur Street with views across Trafalgar Square, Thai Square is probably the best-known Thai restaurant in London, and tourists love the traditional décor and the fast service.

However, its most exciting feature lies in the basement below.  The TSQ club is an intimate and atmospheric venue where you can dance the night away. It’s free entry for ladies before 11PM and £5 after. For the gents, it’s £10 or £15. The club hosts regular themed party nights, so keep an eye on their website to see what’s on the horizon.

The Crazy Bear

A short walk north up Tottenham Court Road will take you to this trendy Thai restaurant and cocktail bar. The fact that this is a favoured hang out for Victoria Beckham should give you an idea of what to expect. The Pornstar Martinis have been described by one reviewer as “the best in London” and the food choice is so extensive that the tasting menu is definitely the way to go.

Downstairs, you’ll find a relaxed, old-style lounge with regular DJs and live jazz nights. Great food, great drink, great music and a good chance of some celebrity spotting – what’s not to like?

Patara

Thai cuisine is around every corner in London. But Patara, in the heart of Soho, offers something a little different from the norm. It’s part of a high-end chain that started life in Bangkok and is famed for its high-end Thai fusion dishes and its futuristic, minimalist décor.

Whether it’s in London, Vienna or Singapore, every Parata chef trains in Thailand to learn the techniques pioneered by the legendary Khun Patara Sila-On, Thailand’s very own version of Nigella Lawson. It’s worth keeping in mind that even while London’s restaurants are closed, Patara is still operating a takeaway menu in conjunction with Deliveroo.
