Jobseekers learn about care work at drop-in ‘Chat to a Carer’ events

Published: 13th February 2020 11:35

SOUTH Devon jobseekers can find out what it is like to work in the care industry from experienced carers during ‘Chat to a Carer’ events in the county next month (March 2020).

Guardian Homecare, which provides homecare in Torbay and Exeter, is hosting drop-in events for people interested in care work every Tuesday in March from 11am-1pm at its Brixham offices.

Manager, Catherine Porter explains: “We think it’s really important for people interested in working with us to be able to speak to someone who has first-hand experience dealing with our service users, so this is why we’re hosting four drop-in ‘Chat to a Carer’ events starting on March 10.

“Attendees can find out what a typical working day is like for a carer and what it involves. They can also find out all about the different training opportunities available, benefits for staff members and how they can turn their career into a vocation for life.”

Guardian Homecare delivers personalised home care supporting people wishing to stay living safely and comfortably in their own homes in south Devon.

It wants to hire more carers this year to provide care to its service users and is offering flexible and supported learning for those wishing to advance their careers.

Care Coordinator at Guardian Homecare, Yasmine Everill says: “I love making a difference to people’s lives and knowing I can really help them. I think the skills anyone interested in a career in care should have include reliability, patience and to also be an excellent team player. It’s really important here that we all pull together and that everyone does their job to the very best of their abilities.”

Guardian Homecare’s teams operating in Torbay and Exeter are currently looking for 100 new honest and kind-hearted individuals and it is offering training and the opportunity for internal advancement. Anyone who joins the team is creating a career path using the different qualifications they can achieve.

Catherine adds: “We’re always looking for caring, honest and reliable individuals to join our team. No experience is necessary to become a carer as we offer free, full training, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve qualifications in health and social care.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands, including holidays and electrical goods, as well as 28 days paid holiday, fully paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a career or someone who just fancies a bit of a change. Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.”

The drop-in ‘Chat to a Carer’ events take place every Tuesday in March, starting on March 10, from 11am until 1pm at Guardian Homecare Brixham offices in Drew Street.
