Despite recession – care provider calls for 100 new carers in south Devon

A SOUTH Devon care provider is calling for kind and caring individuals to come forward to become a care worker as demand for carers continues to rise despite the recession (September 2020).

As other industries face uncertain futures, Guardian Homecare, which provides care to its service users in the Exeter and Torbay areas, is looking for 100 new staff to start now.

Catherine Porter, Manager of Guardian Homecare, says: “Despite the UK economy now entering into a technical recession, following a 20% fall in gross domestic product (GDP) during the second quarter of this year, our company is going from strength-to-strength.

“Demand for care is so high, our team is always expanding and we’re regularly taking on new workers to provide expert care across south Devon.

“There have been lots of recent closures of retail stores in this part of the world, including Pets at Home in Exeter and the 200-year-old, family-run Ridgways Shoes in Newton Abbot, leaving 17 people unemployed. We also understand in Exeter various bridal wear, homeware, fashion and make-up shops closed during the lockdown and will never re-open, plus Exeter Cookery School went into voluntary liquidation. In Torquay some hotels have closed and visitor attractions have been threatened. In June, Living Coasts announced it was to close for good – putting 44 staff at risk of redundancy.

“We want to reassure people who are being made redundant in south Devon from customer facing roles that we have vacancies with immediate start for the right candidates and our jobs offer security and longevity.

“No experience is necessary, just a willingness to care and to learn. We offer free, full training, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve industry-recognised qualifications after the initial six months probationary period.

“There are lots of opportunities for internal advancement for all our team members who show commitment, reliability and true passion. We provide a great support network for carers too.”
