Devon care company says pandemic has highlighted importance of home care

Published: 28th January 2021 12:45

AN AWARD-WINNING Devon care company says last year (2020) has highlighted the importance of the home care sector.

Homelife has seen a huge demand for person-centred care at home from people across the county since the pandemic began.

Katie Jewell, Regional Manager of HomeLife, which has offices in Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and Tiverton, says: “Last year (2020) was no doubt one of the most challenging years for us all due to the pandemic. The home care sector was hugely affected with large numbers of extra staff, access to PPE and COVID-19 testing needed, but it has highlighted just how important home care is for individuals and their families.

“We could not be prouder of our team for enabling our elderly and vulnerable service users to remain in the safety of their own homes and receive the excellent levels of care they have always been used to throughout this time.

“The pandemic has made people realise that their elderly and vulnerable loved-ones don’t necessarily have to go into a care home as they can receive everything they need right at home. It’s also given them a newfound confidence and acceptance about allowing staff into their homes.

“By maintaining their health at home, we help keep them safe. We ensure they take their prescribed medication, and we care for their physical and emotional well-being every day. All this helps prevent adding additional pressure on the NHS and its resources.

“Before now, care work was often seen as low-skilled and underpaid, but people have really had their eyes opened to just how important of an industry it is and how lucky we are to have such a workforce outside of the NHS. People have also been able to see what a rewarding and inspiring career care really is.”

HomeLife is looking to hire new carers to provide care to its service users and is offering flexible and supported learning for those wishing to advance their careers.

“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society especially at the moment with the need to protect the NHS and those who are vulnerable and elderly. With a job for life like this, people can start at the very bottom and work their way up and we will offer them full training and access to industry-leading qualifications.”

Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.

Katie added: “No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is provided. We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week on-boarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation.

“It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification and they’ll also be able to have access to exclusive discounts online and in-store from retailers including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for many major brands, as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.
