Devon planet-kind ice cream brand ups sustainability with 100% recyclable packaging

Author: Melissa E Published: 27th September 2021 15:44

Fravocado based in Heathfield near Bovey Tracey is made with nutrition in mind, offering a healthy, allergen free alternative without lacking flavour or indulgence.

Becky Osborne, Founder and CEO at Fravocado explained: "Having a truly sustainable brand is key in the 21st century. We've created a wonderful product that not only tastes good but offers a viable allergen free alternative to dairy.

"Our ice cream is 100% plant-based and gluten, nut and soya free. But until now our packaging wasn't recyclable, so we asked a local print firm, Newton Print, to help us develop a sleeve to replace our expensive printed tubs with something that was fully planet-positive, recyclable and still had an impactful on-shelf presence."

The updated branded packaging used for Fravocado's ice cream products has been designed and manufactured by Newton Print using a Carbon Balanced production method.

The pots are also sustainable, freezer-safe and have an innovative, plastic free, tamper-proof seal. These reflect the ice cream maker's commitment to reducing its environmental impact, while providing a high-quality product for customers to enjoy.

Nathan Besley, Head of Sales and Customer Service at Newton Print: "We were delighted when Becky got in touch. Together, we've created a completely customisable sleeve from freezer-safe box board to reduce waste and plastics in their packaging.

"The aim was for a more flexible packaging option that didn't involve printing thousands of printed tubs, but that also replaced the plastic adhesive tamper-proof seal that wasn't recyclable.

"As a result, we developed a design for their new range of sleeves that formed a printed wrap around the tub, but also doubled up as a tamper-evident seal."

Founded in 1983, Newton Print Ltd is an approachable, friendly, forward-thinking and carbon-balanced printed packaging firm that provides a collaborative approach to client partnerships based on traditional customer relationships, married with pioneering, innovative ideas, to create successful and sustainable results.

Benefitting from its own on-site production and inhouse creative expertise, Newton Print is a packaging mentor for SMEs. It aims to help demystify printed packaging to allow artisan brands like Fravocado to develop, succeed and grow.
