Devon carers applaud new recruitment initiative for the adult social care sector

Published: 1st May 2020 10:15

DEVON carers are backing a recently launched Government initiative to encourage people to work in adult social care and to recruit more staff into the sector on an on-going basis (May 2020).

The ‘Care for others. Make a difference’ national campaign was unveiled last Thursday (April 23) by Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock and the Minister of State for Care, Helen Whately.

Katie Jewell, Regional Manager of HomeLife, which has offices in Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and Tiverton, says: “We applaud and back this industry-wide campaign to attract more people into social care roles and to highlight the importance of our carers during the current COVID-19 outbreak and beyond. Our teams are trained, professional frontline carers, who are shielding the elderly and most vulnerable in our society while also offering protection to the NHS and its limited resources.

“While we’re coping well at the moment with the demands being made on our teams as a result of the Coronavirus, we do need assistance with getting the recruitment message out there, as we have roles available here in Devon now.”

The Government wants to help recruit more people with the right values and attributes to consider a paid career in adult social care work.

Minister of State for Care, Helen Whately said: “The care sector is a vital part of our society, and this pandemic has truly brought home the skill and commitment of care workers who are looking after some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“We want to make sure everyone knows what an important and valued job care workers do, and inspire more people to step forwards to join the care workforce.

“We also want to support care providers who are looking to recruit staff, so we are offering free initial training to applicants considering a job in care. This should help job seekers looking to work in care for the first time and their future employers.

“We want to bring together all those thinking they might work in care with social care providers looking for new recruits, and to make it as simple as possible for the doors to open up for thousands more compassionate and committed people to work in care.”

The campaign includes the new CARE brand for social care, which symbolises the entire care profession. The brand aims to raise the profile of the care sector and allow businesses to show them the same appreciation as NHS workers.

Currently, 1.5 million people work in adult social care, but the coronavirus outbreak has put additional pressure on the vital work already being provided by the sector.

HomeLife delivers personalised home care supporting people with various medical needs who wish to stay living safely and comfortably in their own homes in Devon.

“We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week onboarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages, generous holiday allocation and a refer a friend scheme.

“We’re committed to up-skilling our workforce and we’re working hard to dispel the myth that carers are not valued by society. Being a carer is an essential, highly skilled, professional vocational occupation. We’re searching for people who are looking for a long-term career, as care is a rapidly expanding sector and there is work in the area for many, many years to come.

“We give all our staff full paid additional training when they start and pay for their DBS and shadowing too. A live-in carer also has free accommodation provided during their stay with the service user.

“We offer flexible and supported training and career advancement opportunities that mean we have a highly trained, motivated and appreciated team.

“Our support is not solely elderly care, we offer home care for adults of various abilities and our team puts people first by helping individuals live independently and providing peace of mind for families. Our service is also completely personalised and ranges from daily visits to respite and overnight care.”

Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in care and would like to know more.
