Please, no tricks on the elderly this Halloween says care provider

Published: 27th October 2020 10:30

LEADING south Devon care provider has this month launched a campaign to ban ‘trick or treating’ on the elderly during Halloween at the end of this month (October 2020).

Guardian Homecare wishes to raise awareness of the plight of the vulnerable in October and to encourage people to avoid their homes if they intend ‘trick or treating’ this year.

Catherine Porter, Manager at Guardian Homecare, which looks after people at home in Torbay and Exeter, said: “We encourage youngsters to have safe fun with Halloween, especially this year when we’ve all been under much greater strain, but as part of our campaign, we also urge them to think about any elderly relatives or neighbours they might have. These celebrations can be especially frightening for them.

“Any elderly people living alone may not want to open their doors to strangers on a cold, dark winter evening. They may also be extra fearful of the risk of getting COVID-19 this year. However, not opening the door could result in a nasty ‘trick’ being played on them, which is equally distressing for older people.

“We want everyone to be more aware of the elderly and vulnerable this Halloween and instead of trick or treating them, perhaps they could just treat them and check they are cosy, warm, happy and doing alright instead? All social contact does need to comply with current restrictions and safe social distancing rules, so please be aware of these too.”

Halloween comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain – a celebration of the end of the summer and the start of winter.

Pope Gregory III made November 1 a day to honour all saints in the 18th century. After some time, these celebrations included some of the traditions of Samhain and the evening before All Saints’ Day became All Hallows Eve and, later, Halloween.

Those that have a feeling of anxiety around Halloween have Samhainophobia. People with this phobia feel panic and stress throughout the Halloween period.

The thought of what someone at the door might do, if they don’t answer it, can be particularly worrying. Trick or treaters have been known to throw eggs, flour, fireworks and even start fires if doors aren’t opened to them.

Catherine added: “We will be providing our service users with posters to display in their windows to deter potential trick or treaters from knocking on their doors and we hope others in Devon follow suit. The posters will be available to download from our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GuardianHomecareUK/jobs/. If you know someone who would benefit from a poster but isn’t Internet able, please do this for them.

“There’s an on-going and growing need for carers in south Devon to help look after the elderly and vulnerable as our population continues to age. Our care extends beyond the physical wellbeing of our service users and covers their emotional and mental health too.

“We constantly need new team members to help us with our work especially at this time of year when people are feeling extra vulnerable and with the ongoing additional threat of COVID-19.”

Guardian Homecare currently employs nearly 200 carers in south Devon and is looking for 100 new honest and kind-hearted individuals to help add to its teams in Torbay and Exeter.

“We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week onboarding programme working towards a care certificate. Being a carer is a key worker position and, once again, this winter we will be helping protect the NHS by ensuring the vulnerable stay safely at home as COVID cases rise and seasonal flu kicks in too. We provide a vital healthcare role that is essential to the health and wellbeing of the nation.

“We’re committed to up-skilling our workforce and we’re working hard to dispel the myth that carers are not valued in the sector. Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society. We’re searching for people who are looking for a long-term career, as care is a rapidly expanding sector with work in the area for many years to come.

“We offer career advancement opportunities that mean we have a highly trained, motivated and appreciated team. We have jobs available in south Devon now with immediate start, no experience necessary just a willingness to care and to learn.”

Guardian Homecare’s support is not solely elderly care, it offers home care for adults of various abilities and its team puts people first by helping individuals live independently and providing peace of mind for families. Its services are also completely personalised and range from daily visits to respite and overnight care.

“It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification and they’ll also be able to have access to exclusive discounts online and in-store from retailers including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for many major brands, as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.
