Hope for jobless comes from care sector which has roles available now

Published: 20th September 2020 09:47

DEVON carers are urging anyone who has recently lost a people-focused job in the county to join them as their customer service skills are needed in the care world (September 2020).

HomeLife Carers says those losing positions at major high street retailers should join the homecare sector, as a job in care can be a role until retirement for the right candidate.

Katie Jewell, Regional Manager for HomeLife Carers, which has offices in Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and Tiverton, said: “Retailers in the UK have cut jobs at the fastest rate ever since 2009 during the last 12 months, according to the CBI’s latest data.

“Decline was felt across all retail sectors, with only groceries, furniture and carpets, and ‘non-store’/other goods seeing growth. Clothing has been heavily hit on the High Street, as too has the hospitality industry. We’re going through prolonged economic uncertainty and more job losses are anticipated by many of the experts.”

Alpesh Paleja, lead economist at the CBI, has said in the media that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been effective at insulating workers in some of the worst-hit sectors, but that job losses had simply been delayed rather than avoided.

“The CBI’s latest survey shows trading conditions for the retail sector remain tough. Firms are worried about dwindling household incomes and the risk of further local lockdowns.

“But we’re able to give hope to anyone worried about their job prospects and financial future, as we need more staff all the time.

“Those who have worked in other sectors where they have interfaced with the general public tend to be empathetic, caring, patience and able to listen. These are just the skills we need in care in the county right now.

“We know many people are worried that what they’ve learnt in one certain industry means they’re restricted when it comes to seeking new employment, but we want to let them know that this simply isn’t true.

“Shop workers tend to have brilliant interpersonal skills. They know how to interact successfully with customers and understand how to treat people with respect. Those who have excelled in their roles are friendly and helpful, which is ideal when visiting the homes of our service users.

“Retail workers have also often been asked to take care of till takings and locking-up at the end of each day, so they are trustworthy individuals. They would have completed stock checks and other admin tasks showing they are organised too. To maintain a role in retail, punctuality and reliability would have been key as well. These are all attributes that can be transferred to our sector.

“We wish to provide the right candidates with job security within the care industry and those that have the right skills and aptitude can have a job for life with us. We want to utilise the skills and knowledge they already have, as well as offer them more training within our sector.”

Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.

“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start at the very bottom and work their way up with training and qualifications.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for.

“No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is provided. We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week on-boarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation. It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to a national staff discount scheme for many major brands, such as online and in-store retailers, including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.

Employees receive 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage too.
