HomeLife supports rights of unpaid carers

Published: 24th November 2020 17:41

AN AWARD-WINNING Devon care agency is backing a national day aimed at supporting rights of unpaid carers this month (November 2020).

This year HomeLife is supporting Carers Rights Day on Thursday, November 26 and says carers who are unpaid and looking after family members need to know their rights and how they can get support.

Katie Jewell, Regional Manager for HomeLife Carers, which has offices in Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and Tiverton, said: “We want to raise awareness for the people out there who are caring for loved ones day-to-day, often unpaid, while also having to deal with their own lives and families.

“Here at HomeLife we feel it’s important to spread awareness of Carers Rights Day and make sure those who are caring for someone, know what they can qualify for and how they can get any help and support.”

Carers UK carried out a recent survey and it was revealed that unpaid carers are being pushed to their limits and are worried about the winter.

Currently four out of five unpaid carers are providing more care this year for relatives. Seventy eight percent reported that the needs of the person they care for have increased during the pandemic.

Sixty seven percent worried about how they will cope through further potential lockdowns or local restrictions.

Katie added: “This year’s theme of Carers Rights Day is ‘Know Your Rights’. The Carers UK charity wants to make sure carers have all the information they need. The charity has produced helpful guides for anyone caring for family or friends. The guides help outline people’s rights as a carer and gives a rundown of the practical and financial support available.

“We want to offer any additional help and support to anyone out there who might be struggling, so we’re inviting any unpaid carers to call us to have a friendly and informal chat and to receive any support and professional advice they need.

“Please call us on 01805 625 999 for the Barnstaple office, 01837 527 33 for Okehampton, 01884 233 700 for Tiverton and 01752 422 222 for Plymouth.”

Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.

“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start at the very bottom and work their way up with training and qualifications.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for.

“No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is provided. We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week on-boarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation. It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to a national staff discount scheme for many major brands, such as online and in-store retailers, including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.

Employees receive 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage too.
