The Woolly Shepherd Helping Sheep Farmers Maximize on Wool Production

Sustainability entrepreneur and local food advocate Nicky Saunter is now heading up The Woolly Shepherd, a local wool insulation and packaging company that has been forging new markets for West Country wool.
Now based in Milverton, Somerset, the company produces a top quality insulation product from low grade and coloured fleeces. This is used to insulate lofts, to keep Riverford Organic's meat boxes cool, and to produce a range of home, pet and garden products, from boot liners and dog beds to tree mulch mats.
"Wool is an incredibly rich natural resource" says Nicky, "and yet many farmers whose sheep give only low grade wool have traditionally been unable to benefit from it. We hope to change that and would like to talk to any farmers or smallholders looking for a market for their wool."
The company is currently testing a range of products, including horticultural mats to reduce watering, acoustic insulation products and boot liners for comfort and warmth.
Val Grainger, who started the company and has been breeding sheep for 30 years, is continuing to support it as a consultant while she turns her mind to improving the market for local fine wools.
