Everybody needs good neighbours says Devon care firm

A DEVON care firm is inviting anyone wishing to do more for their rural or urban community this winter to sign-up to provide care in the area where they live (2020).
HomeLife Carers, which cares for people across mid, north, south and west Devon, is offering jobseekers the opportunity to train as a carer to provide services in their own neighbourhood.
Katie Jewell, Regional Manager for HomeLife Carers, says: “We’re offering people interested in becoming a carer the opportunity to work in their own communities and to not have to travel further afield. Keeping closer to home, being able to walk or cycle to work, is currently especially important if we’re all to help limit the spread of COVID-19 this winter too.
“We have found that there are often people living in the same small, rural community or urban neighbourhood as someone who needs care and support. Working in a close-knit community enables a richer relationship between the carer and the person supported, as they can have more in common and the carer can also pop in more easily.
“People who need our care services love to see a friendly face; having someone from their own community providing the care they need helps them tremendously. They trust a familiar face too. Also the people we care for are elderly and vulnerable, so the current pandemic, coupled with the colder, shorter days and darker evenings throughout the winter, mean they rely completely on those who come into their homes to care for them. Care is an essential job that benefits the whole community.
“Where we can match a person needing support and a carer who lives nearby, this helps enormously with safety during the winter months, as locally-based carers can almost always reach someone, even in poor conditions such as heavy rain or snow.”
Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.
Carers are key workers protecting the county’s NHS by keeping the elderly and vulnerable safely and happily at home.
Katie adds: “We know there are people out there who are likely to be facing redundancy this month after the Chancellor’s recent statement setting out the new support available to employers. He said help would be offered only to those employees whose bosses feel there is a role for them. The furlough scheme is no longer an option and businesses will be facing some tough decisions. Sadly, there will be more jobs lost in the run up to Christmas. To add to this, potential local lockdowns could prevent businesses from trading properly and this could also have an impact on the future of those companies and the people they employ.
“If anyone has recently been made redundant or let go from their role, then a job in their neighbourhood, village or hamlet, where they can walk to see those that need them, could be perfect for them. If you’ve had a customer-facing position before, then you’ll have some of the people-focused skills we’re looking for too and we can give you full, professional training with regards everything else you’ll need to do your job as well.
“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the functioning of our society. With a job for life like this, people can start at the very bottom and work their way up and we will offer them full training and access to industry-leading qualifications.
“No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is provided. We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week on-boarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation.”
