Augustus John: Drawn from Life exhibition unveiled at Poole Museum

Author: undefined Published: 27th July 2018 10:54

A major new exhibition of works by one of the most important British artists of the 20th Century has been unveiled by Poole Museum, Dorset.

Augustus John (1878-1961) was a Welsh-born painter, draughtsman, and etcher, famous for his bohemianism and contribution to British post-impressionism, who lived and worked in Poole.

The new exhibition, titled ‘Augustus John: Drawn from Life', features around 60 art works from museums and galleries such as the National Portrait Gallery and Tate, as well as from private collections around the UK.

The stunning selection of pieces highlights Augustus John's close association with south-west England, its landscape and those closely connected with the region, such as T.E.Lawrence and Thomas Hardy.

As one of Britain's most famous living artists, Augustus John's work earned comparisons with Michelangelo, Gaugin and Matisse.

The exhibition is co-curated by the writer and art historian, David Boyd Haycock and is organised in partnership with The Salisbury Museum. The Salisbury Museum will be host to a similar Augustus John exhibition in 2019 and is curating an exhibition about Henry Lamb, one of Augustus John's proteges and friends, which will in turn come to Poole in 2019.

The Augustus John: Drawn from Life exhibition will run until September 30, 2018, and entry is free, although donations are welcome.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England, the Art Fund through the RA250 programme, The Golsoncott Foundation and Farrow & Ball.
