The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole hosted a successful ‘Eco Style' event at the weekend, held in the centre's Eco Hub from 11am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
The event called on eco-conscious shoppers, local bloggers and keen recyclers to enjoy a fashion event with a sustainable twist. The centre hosted a plastic bag drop and swap shop run by the Secret Wardrobe, encouraging shoppers to bring along unwanted clothing and plastic bags.
In addition, a jewellery recycling workshop took place on the Saturday, followed by a fashion upcycling workshop on the Sunday.
John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: "It was great to see so many customers at our Eco Style event at the weekend, supporting our vision to protect the environment and maintain a sustainable and commercially viable shopping destination.
"Being an environmentally sustainable shopping centre is hugely important for us. The centre's Eco Hub is used for events like this to encourage sustainability and create an environment that encourages health and wellbeing."
During the event, specific zones were established within the Eco Hub, including ‘Water Pollution,' ‘Waste,' ‘Deforestation' and ‘Global Warming.' Key facts were displayed within these zones to provide information and raise awareness.
Sustainable and eco-fashion blogger, Alanna Smith, owner of Ecowildchild blog, was invited to the shopping centre on Saturday to present a talk to customers on ethics in fashion and environmental issues. Alanna commented: "We need to be more conscious about our consumption, spend wisely and invest in more ethical and sustainable brands.
"My advice is to spend wisely, invest in high-quality clothing that will last and can be easily mended and treasured for years to come. I own many beautiful pieces of my mum's, which she had in the 70's! Clothing can last and be kept beautifully, so let's focus on living a less ‘throw-away' fashion lifestyle."
