Local shopping centre welcomes Maritime Volunteer Service to its Eco Hub

Author: Online Stories Published: 14th March 2019 13:08

Maritime Volunteer Service in Poole will shortly be exhibiting at the Dolphin Shopping Centre to help the charity raise its profile in the local community.

The charity will have a stand at the shopping centre's Eco Hub from Friday March 15 to Thursday March 21 to encourage people to find out more about the work of the Service and their role in the local community.

The Maritime Volunteer Service in Poole is part of a national charity that is fully operated by locally-based volunteers and provides training to nationally and internationally recognised standards, serving local communities in times of need or emergency, as well as taking part in resilience exercises ashore and afloat. Members are trained in boat handling skills through a combination of classroom training activities and on-the-water exercises.

Brian Margetson, volunteer for Maritime Volunteer Service in Poole, commented: "We are so grateful to the Dolphin Shopping Centre for providing us this space to help raise awareness of what we offer. We rely on volunteers as there are no paid staff and we offer members the ability to obtain nationally recognised qualifications at low certification costs, unequalled elsewhere, in return for a commitment to participate in our work for the community.

"We serve the Poole community by offering safety patrols, both routine on summer weekends and at a variety of events, including Bournemouth Air Festival, Poole Harbour Boat Show, Brownsea Island's Swim Race, and many others."

John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: "We're looking forward to welcoming Maritime Volunteer Service to our Eco Hub later on this week. We like to provide shoppers the opportunity to find out more about local charities and volunteering opportunities that are available to them."

The Eco Hub launched in 2018 as part of the Dolphin's ongoing commitment to sustainability. It is open during the centre's regular opening hours and is free to use. Email info@dolphinshoppingcentre.co.uk with any booking enquiries.
