Rocking and Racing at Silverstone Classic 2012
Festival goers seeking something slightly different this summer should look no further than the Silverstone Classic powered by The AA (20-22 July). Staged at the world famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire just two weeks after the Santander Formula 1 British Grand Prix, the Silverstone Classic is already established as the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival – but with live rock concerts plus a host of other attractions all included in the ticket price, the three-day event has far wider appeal.
“Whether you’re a Glastonbury regular searching for an alternative style of festival or a hardcore motoring enthusiast, the Silverstone Classic has it all,” according to event director Nick Wigley. “By day there’s the glorious roar of some of the world’s finest V8 and V12 engines and then by night the magic of hard driving guitar licks – could there be a more perfect way to spend a weekend? The unique ‘Rocking and Racing’ formula is proving a real hit with the fans and we’ve increased our camping options this year to accommodate the growing number staying at Silverstone throughout the festival.”
A number of top bands have performed at the Silverstone Classic in recent years including Suzi Quatro, Santana, 10cc, Wishbone Ash and the Yardbirds. This year’s star-studded line-up is every bit as impressive. To get everybody in the right party mood the concerts kick off as the sun goes down on Friday evening with the Taking Care of Elvis Show, rated as one of the best tributes to the ‘King’, Elvis Presley. Next up is Roy G Hemmings’ Motown Show. Hemmings was an original member of the legendary Drifters and is celebrating 50 years of Motown by performing many of those unforgettable chart-topping hits from the likes of The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Friday’s festivities culminate with Mike & Mechanics, fronted by Mike Rutherford, a founding member of ‘prog rock’ giant Genesis. The band now includes Nineties chart topper Andrew Roachford.
Saturday’s line-up is every bit as dazzling. Eighties pop star Adam Ant tops the bill, which also features Snakecharmer – a twin guitar supergroup formed by ex-members of Whitesnake – and the Bogus Brothers, one of Europe’s top party bands.
In addition, the exciting new AA World automotive theme park will boast its own live music shows, while the all-female Tetra Electra Quartet will perform amplified arrangements of classical favourites on Sunday afternoon.
Tickets not only give access to race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live rock concerts but also to AA World’s interactive driving experiences plus a vast number of other attractions providing genuine enjoyment for all ages and interests. While petrol heads will marvel at special track parades and displays featuring more than 7000 classic cars, there’s so much more entertainment on offer throughout all three days: a vintage fun fair, go-karts, aerial displays with wing walkers, the Parachute Regiment ‘The Red Devils’, hot air balloons, Punch and Judy shows (celebrating 350 years), Street Car Shootouts and an off-road zone featuring rally and 4x4 passenger rides.
For those looking for a bit of relaxation, there’s a chance for a massage or manicure or to browse through more than 200 exhibitors presenting a wide range of automobilia, art and photography, autojumble plus gifts for everyone.Festival goers can also enjoy a drink and bite to eat in front of the giant screen on the ‘Village Green’.
With so much to see and do an ever-increasing number of Silverstone Classic visitors are taking advantage of special multi-day ticket offers and turning the three-day event into a pop-style festival. To meet this demand a wide choice of on-site camping and ‘glamping’ options are available. These range from tent pitches on the fully serviced circuit-side Woodlands Campsite to unique Snoozebox accommodation. The latter provides modern and stylish rooms complete with flat screen television, double bed, free WiFi and air conditioning.
Adult tickets cost from as little as £35 if purchased in advance and special two- and three-day weekend tickets are also available with savings of more than 20 per cent if purchased in advance. Full details are available via the event’s official www.silverstoneclassic.com website.
