68% Of Brits Want To Escape The 21st Century

Author: English Heritage Published: 2nd August 2013 12:44

68% Of Brits Want To Escape The 21st CenturyHadrian's Wall Nearly 7 in 10 (68%) Brits would like to escape the 21st century according to a survey commissioned by English Heritage ahead of its summer events season, which brings 2000 years of history to life at its sites around the country - including Hadrian's Wall (pictured).

Carried out by YouGov, the survey asked people which period in time they'd most like to travel back to. 16% said they'd like to go back to Victorian times with the Edwardian period in second place (14%) and Roman and Medieval tying for third (8%).  Those living in the East of England put the Victorian and Edwardian periods in joint first place with 15% each and only 6% voted for the Roman period.

In a summer of events at English Heritage properties across the East of England, visitors can discover what life was like throughout the ages. Audley End House and Gardens bring the idyllic Victorian period vividly to life every weekend (except August bank holiday) as the service wing and stables spring to life with costumed characters and Mrs Crocombe demonstrates some seasonal recipes in the kitchens. Down House in Kent, the home of Charles Darwin also offers a unique insight into the Victorian period and family life as it feels like they have just vacated each room as you step foot into them.

Victorian Skittles at Wrest Park Victorian Skittles at Wrest Park People who voted to escape back to medieval times can do just that with the drama of a Knights' Tournament at Framlingham Castle in Suffolk, or a Grand Medieval Joust at Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire.

For the younger explorers in the family who want to visit a different era each week and then decide which is the best, they can take part in a Time Travellers Go... event at Wrest Park, Bedfordshire or at one of the many English Heritage properties nationwide.

People can cast their own vote on the English Heritage Facebook page (http://poll.fm/4c5ph) or find out more at www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/events
