Charity needs more counsellors in Dorset as demand for mental wellbeing support rockets

Published: 16th March 2022 10:55

A WELLBEING charity working in Bournemouth wants to recruit 30 Associate Therapists and Practitioners this month to help meet a soaring demand for counsellors now Covid restrictions have lifted (March 2022).

Options Wellbeing Trust, which provides professional support to people across Dorset covering many life issues, is on the hunt for qualified therapists or practitioners to join its team in Westbourne.

Wendy Lee, Head of Health and Wellbeing at the not-for-profit organisation, which has a therapy hub on Poole Road, explains: “Our services cover topics including issues connected with loneliness and isolation brought on by the restrictions and now overflowing into the post pandemic phase we’re now entering.

“Also, we’re now dealing with anxiety as people have returned to ‘normal’, leaving the safety of home and getting used to being in work environments, where they are in close contact once again with colleagues.

“There are also issues related to the uncertainty connected with potential new hybrid working patterns too. Plus, self-harm, trauma and bereavement related to illness, long Covid and pandemic-related deaths. As well as, alcohol and gambling issues, which may have been magnified as restrictions have ended. We’re also hearing from many people who have seen their relationships breakdown due to the stresses and strains of the past two years.

“Added to these are new anxieties related to the war in Ukraine, the potential impact on us all and financial worries about rising costs in this country. As a result of all this, we’re seeing lots of requests from people in the Bournemouth area that need our support.

“We are also seeing a rise in clients requesting face-to-face appointments and evening appointments due to people returning to their pre-pandemic work life. To help meet this demand, we’re looking for Associate Therapists and Practitioners to join our friendly and supportive community.

“We’d like anyone out there who is a qualified therapist or practitioner and registered with a recognised professional body such as BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), UKRCP, CA & ANLP, to contact us to find out more.”

The roles Options Wellbeing is currently looking to fill are on a self-employed basis and those that join the charity will be able to take advantage of a whole host of benefits by becoming an associate.

It is asking that anyone interested is able to commit to a minimum of four hours per week during daytime and one evening per week.

Wendy adds: “We’re here for anyone who needs our support, not for profit and are looking for people who have experience working with those with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship, alcohol and gambling issues to join our team.

“If you have experience in these areas, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch through our social media pages or by emailing support@optionswellbeing.co.uk to find out more.”

Options Wellbeing is part of Social Care in Action (SCiA), which is a not-for-profit group of charitable social enterprises working together to improve health and wellbeing in communities across the south of England.
