Surprise! What Your Tuition Fees Don’t Cover At University

Published: 10th September 2019 15:41

You may have done the calculations and decided that you can actually afford a university education.

One problem inevitably arises once you get to uni, however. Hidden costs are everywhere.

Navigating your education while also worrying about finances is not a great way to start out. It pays to make sure you know what out of pocket expenses come with being a student that you might not have anticipated.

In this article, we will reveal some of the hidden costs of your studies so you can either avoid them or make sure you have enough money saved to absorb those costs.

Your books

The cost of your books may not be so hidden, yet when confronted with the price, it can be jolting. You know you need to pay for them yourself, but you may not realize just how expensive they can be.

How to avoid high costs:

Look for second-hand sellers for recent editions. Pay close attention to which editions are acceptable as older ones may not be current enough for the curriculum.

Look out for buyback periods. Your university will often buy back your books once your academic year is over. You will only get pennies on the pound for them, but it does defray the cost somewhat. There are also other non university programs that buy used books.

Use the library. This is the least efficient and often stressful way to save money on your books. You only have a limited amount of time you can have the book. And, it may not be available when you need it. If you do get lucky it can be a lifesaver.

Course materials

Depending on the degree and the courses themselves, you may have to pay out of pocket for the materials required.

An example of this could be a stethoscope for a medical or nursing degree. Pay close attention to the curriculum and ask your prospective professor about any additional expenses you may run into when taking their class.

Hidden costs

Besides some of the university related expenses, there are other hidden costs to consider. For instance, a student TV license is something not many people realize they will need to pay. You can avoid it by declaring that you are not eligible since you don’t have a TV. But, you’ll also need to pay even if you plan to stream any BBC shows on your computer.

How to offset these costs

Working a part time job while in university is a very popular way to keep some extra cash in your pocket. Jobs like barista and waiter offer flexible schedules you can work around your studies.

Some other ideas are to work some paid internships around your area. For instance, if you plan to be a teacher then you could make several hundred pounds with a bursary.

Summary

Don’t allow yourself to arrive at university and then have finances try to derail your studies. Ask a lot of questions and make sure you have more money saved than you think you will need.
