Lewis Hamilton suffered the first setback of the 2019 Formula One season, finishing in fifth place at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Brit was off the pace and finished outside of the top three for the first time of the campaign as Max Verstappen claimed the second triumph of his career. It was a missed opportunity for the rivals of Hamilton at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. Neither Valtteri Bottas nor Sebastian Vettel were able to make inroads into the 34-year-old’s advantage. As a result, Hamilton remains in a dominant position and on course for his third title on the bounce.
The Mercedes driver has the challenge of getting back to winning ways on home soil. His recent record at the British Grand Prix has been excellent, overcoming past issues at Silverstone. Hamilton has triumphed on four out of his past five appearances at the venue. Therefore if you’re planning to bet on British Grand Prix, the 34-year-old is the straightforward option for the victory. There’s not going to be great value in backing the Brit to triumph and it could be worth analysing his past failures to see whether it would be prudent to back another driver to take top place on the podium.
Vettel won the British Grand Prix last season even after starting behind Hamilton on the grid. The Brit suffered a collision with Kiki Raikkonen, which allowed the Ferrari driver to get the advantage and he did not relinquish the lead from that point onwards. It proved to be a rare moment of joy for the German in the 2018 campaign as Hamilton bounced back with a vengeance to dominate the rest of the season and claim the Drivers’ Championship. There is proof that the Brit can be beaten on home soil, although it will take a special effort from the rest of the field to knock him off at Silverstone.
Hamilton had won the British Grand Prix in the previous four seasons, even in the year when he was beaten to the title by his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. After a slow start to his career at the British Grand Prix, Hamilton has turned the venue into one of his most imperious tracks. When he won the race in 2017 he joined elite company in the form of Jim Clark and Alain Prost as the only men to have won the meet five times. He will be desperate to pull out in front of the two drivers, standing alone at the top with six triumphs.

So far in the 2019 campaign Hamilton has responded to disappointment in emphatic fashion. After watching Bottas win the opening race of the term in Melbourne, the Brit reeled off back-to-back victories in Bahrain in China. His Mercedes team-mate got back on the top spot podium in Azerbaijan, but the 34-year-old produced another clinical comeback to storm back to the top of the Drivers’ Championship. His worst performance of the season to date will motivate the Brit to re-establish his dominance over the field. Making history at Silverstone could be the start of his seemingly inevitable surge to the Drivers’ Championship.
