The Even Bigger Picture

A 23 mile long walk with the East Yorkshire Long Distance Walking Association

As David Hockney's widely-acclaimed "A bigger picture" embarks on a repeat performance in Bilbao, entries are coming in from around the country from footslogging tourists planning to take a look at the even bigger picture at the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds next month, see attached entry form.

No entries from Spain yet, but the interesting historic background to this annual 23-miler is that the original village walk on which it is based (and which still takes place on the same day) was designed to provide the bigger picture on a Yorkshire Wolds country estate. As the haymaking began and the stock moved out again into the dales and pastures, the church-organised walk gave the woodman and the dairyman the opportunity to see what the ploughman and the stockman had been doing and allow everyone to make their own assessment of the production possibilities in the coming months.

Whilst much is made of Hockney's uncovering of the well kept secret of the Wolds (and we long-distance walkers certainly admire and enjoy his work) some of the best kept secrets are even less known and can only be reached on foot. This particular event has the unique advantage of being largely off-footpath and the roads that feature in the majority of his pictures (he doesn't go far from the road, neither will the motoring tourists) are the ones walkers pass along on their way to walks or cross during the course of them.

As the success of "The bigger picture" continues to generate international interest the EYLDWA, the village and farming community can provide a unique overview of the even bigger picture.
