Ofsted Celebrations for 'Happy' School

A village school is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors ruled that it is a ‘good' school, which is at the heart of the community it serves.

Walkington Primary School has maintained its previous rating as ‘good' following a recent visit by the inspection team.

They described it as ‘a happy and harmonious school' which provides a caring and supporting environment in which pupils achieve well, feel safe and are valued.

The inspectors ruled that teaching is good overall, and sometimes outstanding. They said teachers are enthusiastic and ensure that all pupils are inspired to learn through exciting lessons.

Their report said that pupils are proud of their school, are eager to learn and their behaviour is described as ‘exemplary'.

The inspectors said that headteacher Chris Bullough is resolute in setting a clear direction for how successful the school can be, and is ably supported by a skilled leadership team.

To improve further, and become outstanding, Ofsted said the school should increase the proportion of outstanding teaching, and raise pupils' attainment, especially in writing.

Mr Bullough said: "I am pleased that the inspectors really grasped what is special about the school, such as the strength of relationships and the positive attitudes of the pupils and staff.

"It is good to read an inspection report which celebrates the broad, exciting and enjoyable experience which primary education offers. I believe the outcome of the inspection is a very positive endorsement of our school aim, namely to create successful learners who get the most out of life and feel good about themselves."

Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: "Walkington School is a lovely friendly environment where children can learn and achieve their best. The whole school community can be rightly proud of this report."
