Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
"I'm placing you under arrest for murder, conspiracy to commit murder and, I don't know, possibly littering."
Stephanie Edgley's uncle Gordon wrote horror fiction. At least that's what Stephanie thought - until he died and left her his estate. Then she discovered that though his books may have been horror, they weren't exactly... well, fiction.
Plunged into a terrifying world of vampires, evil villains and Hollow Men, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source. Meet Skulduggery Pleasant; wise-cracking, sharply dressed detective, powerful magician, sworn enemy of evil. Oh yes - and dead. When all hell breaks loose it's lucky for Stephanie that she's not your average twelve-year-old girl - and it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead.
Will evil win the day? Will Stephanie and Skulduggery stop bickering long enough to save the world?
Over his dead body. Oh, wait...
One thing's for sure: the bad guys won't know what hit them.
Skulduggery Pleasant is the debut novel of Irish playwright Derek Landy published in 2007 with a target audience of children and young adults. It won the coveted Red House Children's Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award. The novel incorporates elements of horror, comedy, mystery and fantasy throughout. It is the first in the series of Skulduggery Pleasant novels.
This book is ridiculously good fun from beginning to end and is filled with a fantastic array of unforgettable characters. The pace is good and contains lots of drama and intrigue and hilarious dialogue. Forget that it's meant to be a children's book absolutely anyone could read this book. And they should. You definitely should.
