Seven Year Olds Top the Class with Key Stage 1 Results
East Riding schools and pupils have proved themselves top of the class with their 2013 Key Stage 1 results.
The East Riding is the top performing local authority in Yorkshire and Humberside for its level 2+ performance in reading, writing and maths.
The region is also the top Yorkshire and Humberside performer at level 3 reading and maths, and only one per cent below the best regional performance in writing.
The results at a local authority level for reading, writing and mathematics show increases against the 2012 figures, and place the East Riding above the national average on all measures at level 2b and above, which is the expected level for seven-year-olds. Higher ability performance at level 3 has also risen this year across the board.
The most significant increases were seen in reading at level 3 - where results increased by four per cent against 2012 to a figure of 32 per cent, and level 2b+ with 81 per cent of children achieving this level, an increase of three per cent against 2012. Writing at level 3 also improved by three per cent against last year's results.
The results are a testament to the good start pupils are being given in schools across the county.
Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: "I am pleased that these results show our children are well prepared for the next stage of their education in primary school.
"Without a good early grounding children will struggle to succeed and I look forward to hearing of these pupils' progress through to secondary school and beyond."
Mike Furbank, head of children, young people, education and schools, said: "It is encouraging to see these results- they demonstrate the firm foundations put in place throughout the county by our schools. The improvements at level 3 are particularly pleasing, as this has been an area of focus for us in recent years. Well done to all."
