Keeping the streets of Essex Safe
According to statistics, almost 1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. Rape numbers have increased by 23.7% in the last couple of years and 150,000 children go missing in the UK every year. In an effort to educate women and children on the dangers of walking the streets of Chelmsford, local Crime Prevention services and companies are working together to inform them on the best ways to avoid danger and to keep safe. We had a few terrifying incidents of assaults on women in our own town last year, which has led to more local women becoming aware of potential risk.
According to the Home Office, if you carry a personal alarm you have a 97% higher chance of warding off a potential attacker. Almost 1 in 20 women were stalked last year and 1 in 5 will experience it in their lifetime. And yet less than 3% of women currently carry an alarm or even think about their safety until it is too late. The best way to stay safe is to follow the following safety tips.
Plan ahead before you go out
Before you are going out think about how you are getting home
Always tell someone where you are going
Make sure your mobile phone is always charged up
Try to use well lit busy streets and use the route you know best
Avoid quiet or badly lit streets
Try to keep both hands free
Avoid using a mobile phone and using a personal stereo
Try to stay with friends when you are out
