Under 5s Heat Winners at Waltham Abbey Pancake Day Races 2014

Flipping good fun!

Back for its fifth year the popular Waltham Abbey Pancake Day Races return on Shrove Tuesday 17th February 2015 in Waltham Abbey Town Centre with the first race starting at 10.30am.

Apollo Cafe Business Winner in action at 2014 Pancake Day RacesPlease come along and support this local community traditional annual fun event, join in the races or shout and cheer on the participants.

Races start outside Waltham Abbey Library on pedestrianised Sun Street in Waltham Abbey Town Centre:

  • 10.30pm - Businesses Races
  • 11.00am - Under 5's Races
  • 11.45am - Parents & Carers Races
  • 12.00pm - Over 5's Races

Everyone welcome, no charge to participate or to watch.  Please note the above times are approx. as difficult to estimate the number of children who will want to race especially as it is in half term holiday week for the first time.

All children participating will get a small prize each and the winners will receive a goody bag and a cup to take home with them.

All participants will need to complete an entry form, it would be really helpful if this could be completed and brought with you to the event, but copies will be available on the day.

Click on the link below to download the 2015 Entry Form or pick one up from the Library:

Pancake Day Race Entry Form

Entry forms can be emailed to: jeffen9@aboutmyarea.co.uk or brought with you on the day.  Remember to ensure your child is wearing appropriate footwear, aprons, hats, frying pans and pancakes will be provided.

The first races will be for local Waltham Abbey businesses and shop owners at 10.30am. Followed by Under 5's Races starting at 11.00am followed by the Mums, Dads and Carers Races and finishing with the Over 5's Races starting at 12.00pm. Please note children will race with children of a similar age and it is only open to primary school children. If your child wins their heat then they will go through to the final.

The Pancake Day Races are organised by the Waltham Abbey Town Partnership in support of the Waltham Abbey Loves Food initiative that supports and promotes the wide variety of places to eat in Waltham Abbey. The event is supported by AboutMyArea/EN9 website and Waltham Abbey Town Council.

Waltham Abbey Town Partnership would like to thank Tescos for donating the children's prizes, aprons & hats and pancakes for the races and to Duncan Phillips Estate Agents for sponsoring the winners' cups.

If the weather conditions on the day are wet, icy or snowy, unfortunately, this event will be cancelled due to health and safety reasons, the decision will be made by 9.30am on the day of the races and anyone who has completed a form in advance will be notified.

Apollo Cafe on Sun Street won the Businesses Race last year, will they be defending their title this year?

Previous business winners include Henry Ward Property Solutions and CSS Motors will they be joining in again? Why not come along and find out!

Epping Forest District Museum is currently closed for refurbishment, however, they run their family fun art activities sessions in the school holidays in the Library. For the cost of just £1 your child can enjoy an art or craft activity on Tuesday 17th Feb inside in the warm while waiting for their pancake race to begin!

If you haven't been down to Waltham Abbey Town Centre for a while why not venture down on Tuesday 17th February in the half term holiday and enjoy participating or watching the Pancake Day Races, pop into the Library to pick up a book or a video or join in the Museum family fun art activity, check out the new shops and the Tuesday market stalls.  You could even treat yourself and your children to lunch out, expect several of the cafes will be serving pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday!
