Waltham Abbey Historical Celebration Event

Holy Cross Day celebrations will be held this year on Sunday 13th September 2015 in Waltham Abbey commemorating the bringing of the miraculous Holy Cross from Montacute in Somerset to Waltham by Tovi the Proud, Standard Bearer to King Cnut in 1035.

At 5.45pm on Sunday a Procession of pilgrims, re-enacting the bringing of the Cross from Montacute in Somerset, wlll leave Waltham Town Lock (opposite McDonalds car park) and make its way to the Abbey Church on foot, accompanied by a Quarter Peal rung on the Abbey Church bells. Medieval costume desirable, but not essential, everyone welcome to join in the procession.

A Choral Evensong in the Abbey Church will take place at 6.30pm, the procession and evensong will be followed by a short informal act of worship in the Cloisters. The celebrations will conclude with cheese and wine in the Church.

Please note that the procession will be under the control of marshals, but participants walk at their own risk.

Holy Cross Day walk to Abbey Church

In addition to the Sunday 13th September celebrations, there will be two services held on Friday 18th September especially for local primary schools held by Rev Joyce Smith, when the Legend of the Holy Cross will be re-told.  Schools will be contacted directly about these arrangements. These services are not open to the public.

The Holy Cross Day event is organised by Waltham Abbey Church in conjunction with the King Harold Day Society, Waltham Abbey Historical Society and Waltham Abbey Town Council.

Please support the Holy Cross celebrations and be a part of this local history community event, organisers are particularly keen to ensure they have enough people representing "Saxons" on the walk at 5.45pm on Sunday as history foretold that 66 Saxons brought the Holy Cross to Waltham. If you would like to be a "Saxon" all you need to do is meet at Waltham Town Lock and walk to Abbey Church following the cross.
