Were you inspired by the Olympics? Have you ever wanted to start up a sports club but didn't know where to start? Help is at hand with funding now available from Northamptonshire Sport to help people to set up new sports clubs in Northamptonshire.

In a recent survey conducted in partnership with the Sport and Recreation Alliance to assess the local impact of the London 2012 Olympics, almost half of clubs have seen an increase in their membership with most clubs citing a lack of funding as a factor in preventing the club membership growing further.

In addition to this, as a result of the success of many less known sports such as handball, sports development officers across the county are fielding requests from individuals wanting to try these sports. However they either do not exist at all across the county or only exist in certain areas within the county.

Up to £500 is available for anyone in Northamptonshire wanting to set up:

  • a completely new sports club
  • a satellite club
  • a new section as part of a club that already exists

This could be a completely new volleyball club where one doesn't currently exist or an existing cricket club that wants to set up a women's section. Priority will be given to 16+ participation.

If you haven't been involved in setting up a club or a sports activity before - don't worry : the programme will also link to Sport England's national Sport Makers programme which aims to get more people volunteering in sport. As part of the funding they will attend a short workshop, which will give them the skills and knowledge to help them start the club. And after the workshop Northamptonshire Sport will provide support in promoting the programmes and setting up the clubs.

The deadline for applications is on the 28th January 2013 but projects will be assessed throughout so if you are looking to start something in early January still please get in touch.

For more information and to find out what a successful application would look like, please contact Greg Yarnall, Sports Development Officer at Northamptonshire Sport on 01604 367133 or email gyarnall@northamptonshire.gov.uk or visit http://www.northamptonshiresport.org/clubs/clubstart
