Witham Choral Society - A Royal Celebration
Witham Choral Society will be presenting a varied concert of splendid music on 11 June at 7.30 p.m. at the United Reformed Church, Newland Street which will include pieces played at the Queen's Coronation in 1953.
"We shall be performing Handel's Zadok the Priest," Musical Director Patrick McCarthy told us, "which has been sung at every Coronation service since 1712, as well as Purcell's Trumpet Tune which was played before the ceremony began. The main work of the evening will be Vivaldi's ever-popular Gloria and also on the programme is a lively Missa Brevis by Joseph Haydn which features gorgeous duets for two sopranos. Rehearsals are going well and it will be a marvellous concert."
The choir will be joined by the Colchester Bach Ensemble who will play the much-loved Gabriel's Oboe from the film ‘The Mission', Greensleeves which was supposed to have been written by King Henry VIII, and tunes arranged by Vaughan Williams for the film ‘The England of Elizabeth'.
Anne Priest, Chairman of the Society mentioned: "Witham's Community Day will be held on Saturday 11 June from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and what better way to round off a day which highlights our town's strengths than to join its Choral Society for an evening of celebratory musical gems."
Strawberries and cream will be available at the concert!
Tickets are £10 with £5 for those in full-time education. They are available from the Visitor Information Centre at Witham Town Hall and from choir members. Details from 01376 513713.
