Handel's Messiah at Colston Hall Bristol, Saturday 21 December

Published: 18th December 2013 16:02

Handel's Messiah will be performed by Bristol Choral Society at Colston Hall, Bristol on Saturday 21 December - marking 121 years to the day since the choir's first Messiah at Colston Hall, a tradition that has continued almost every year since on the Saturday before Christmas.

Handel's Messiah is a Christmas favourite - performed thousands of times all over the world every year - and includes many numbers that are well-known and loved, such as For unto us a child is born, I know that my redeemer liveth and of course the Hallelujah chorus to name a few.

These days, Bristol Choral Society gives not just one, but two performances in one day, and both are unique to Bristol:

The 7.30pm evening performance is performed by the 100+ strong choir completely from memory (believed to be the only choir in the country to do so), in a style that is light and dancing, with the delightful playing of Baroque orchestra Music for Awhile (led by renowned violinist Margaret Faultless).

At 4.30pm, hundreds of children come to hear the Mini Messiah family concert - a shortened family-friendly version of Handel's Messiah with some of the favourite numbers, including, of course, the Hallelujah chorus.

Both concerts feature the choir, orchestra Music for Awhile and soloists Mary Nelson (soprano), James Neville (countertenor), Daniel Auchincloss (tenor) and John Savournin (baritone) all under the direction of conductor Adrian Partington.

Tickets are available online at www.bristolchoral.co.uk (until 4pm Thursday), and from Colston Hall (0844 887 1500, online and in person) until the respective concert start times on Saturday.
