Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and more at Bristol Concert Orchestra's concert

Bristol Concert Orchestra presents a 'music from the screen' inspired concert this Saturday 28 June at St George's Bristol at 7.30pm.
Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue takes centre stage: expertly combining elements of classical and jazz music, tonight's performance of this American classic for piano and orchestra features the four hands of not one but two soloists sharing the same keyboard, with favourite soloist You-Chiung Lin joining conductor Stefan Hofkes who will also direct the orchestra from the piano.
The colours of the symphony orchestra are vividly brought to life in Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (originally composed for an educational film), brilliantly written around a well-known theme by Henry Purcell - the various instruments and sections of the orchestra all get to showcase their qualities individually, before Britten combines all the instruments (and various tunes) in a thrilling final fugue. A long-time favourite for introducing children to instruments, this work is also a popular concert piece in its own right, and Saturday's performance will also feature narration in the theatrical tones of David Barrell.
A variety of other music with familiar themes from the screen completes the programme for this family-friendly concert, including Verdi's Force of Destiny Overture, some of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, John Barry's sumptuous theme from Out of Africa, Wagner's iconic Ride of the Valkyries and maybe more...
There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Jessie May Trust.
Tickets priced £6-£15 (children £1) are available from St George's Bristol online, by phone (0845 40 24 001) or in person at St George's Bristol.
