Sue and Marian clock up 30+ years of care work

Published: 20th July 2018 15:06

Sixty-seven-year-old Susan Bowen from Pontypool has worked in care for 34 years and 63-year-old Marian Guest from Pontypool has clocked up 35 years of service in the industry.

Katie Jewell, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, which has offices at Torfaen Business Centre, said: “Many people believe that the care industry has a high turnover of staff and that it’s not a job people can do for life, but Sue and Marian have proved this wrong and we would like to congratulate them both on their long service in the industry.

“They have shown themselves to be extremely dedicated and hardworking, which is something we look for in all our employees. They are a true inspiration to others already in the industry and those thinking about joining it and are testament to the fact that in this day and age, where you hear about companies falling into administration and employees losing their jobs on a regular basis, you can still have a career for life.

“Our service users really benefit from having long serving staff members as it means they can get to know the friendly faces that visit them and many form a real friendship over the years, making them much more comfortable in their own homes to have what they consider to be a friend pop in to take care of them rather than a different person each time.”

Sue began her career in care in 1984 with a home help position with the care authority in the area. In 2001 she took on a position at ISS Healthcare as a home carer, where she has remained ever since.

She said: “I love supporting individuals in order to enable them to stay safe and in their own homes. I look after their wellbeing and try to help them remain as independent as possible. I never thought when I started my job in care that I would still be doing it more than 30 years later, but here I am and enjoying it just as much as I did on day one.”

Marian started working in the care industry in 1983 and has worked her way up the career ladder and is now the Branch Manager for Torfaen. Her job role includes managing the branch and its staff members as well as the company’s service users.

She said: “Caring for individuals has been my life-long passion and is something I thoroughly enjoy. I have been able to turn this passion into a career and really do have a job for life here at ISS Healthcare.”

ISS Healthcare provides care support to thousands of people, with services commissioned through authorities in the area or purchased privately by individual service users or their families.

Its aim is to deliver care, which improves the lives of its service users and that treats them, and their families, with respect, dignity and compassion.

ISS Healthcare believes its services should not only comply with regulatory standards, but that it also delivers excellence and promote overall wellbeing.

Katie added: “Anyone who is inspired by Susan and Marian and would like to make a long-term career for themselves in the industry should get in touch as we are always recruiting new team members.

“Carers who join our team will be able to train to help to provide quality care for our older service users, enabling them to continue living fulfilling lives in the homes they know and love, or provide flexible, person-centred support at home or in the community for people of all ages with all kinds of physical or learning disabilities or mental health needs.

“We also have positions available in our complex care teams, providing bespoke care, sometimes around the clock, to enable people with complex needs to be supported in their own homes, and our reablement care team, who work with people to re-learn skills and rebuild confidence and independence after suffering illness or injury.

“We offer new recruits a five day training induction and a 12 week onboarding program in order for them to obtain a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full time and part time, as well as competitive wages, generous holiday allocation and a refer a friend bonus scheme.

“It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification and they’ll also be able to have access to exclusive discounts online and in-store from retailers including Tesco, Primark and Argos.”

ISS Healthcare is looking for kind, committed and reliable people, who have excellent communication skills and a genuine care for others.

Katie continued: “Being honest and reliable is key to this role as people will be looking after the needs of vulnerable adults. Applicants also need to be even tempered and caring and must enjoy making a positive difference to people’s lives.

“Being patient, able to cope with change and having the ability to display empathy and warmth are also essential. Anyone interested in a position should call 01495 759977 or email ravina.goodland@isstorfaen.co.uk.”
