ISS Healthcare calls for people to look out for older people’s mental health

A LEADING Welsh home care provider is urging people to look out for elderly loved-one’s mental health as part of World Mental Health Day next month (October 10, 2020).
This year’s theme is ‘mental health for all’ and ISS Healthcare says the elderly are some of the most susceptible to issues due to loneliness, exacerbated by the current pandemic.
Caroline Jones, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, which provides care to people in their own homes in Torfaen and the surrounding areas and has offices at Torfaen Business Centre, said: “For many elderly people, living alone is bad enough, but throw in the Coronavirus pandemic, and the lockdown restrictions, and this has made the situation 10 times harder for them. The social isolation and loss of routine can have a huge impact, leading to confusion, loneliness and, as research has found, declining mental health.
“We wanted to show our support on World Mental Health Day and hope the kind and caring people of Wales will follow our lead and check in on their loved-ones, neighbours or friends, from a safe, social distance.
“We want people to remember the older generation at this unprecedented point in our world history. Anything you can do, from a simple phone call, letter or zoom call, to a socially distanced cup of tea, to put a smile on their faces will be a big help during these worrying times. Remember, always to keep two metres away from anyone who is not a member of your own household, wash your hands regularly, wash them well and, also, keep wiping down surfaces.
“Our carers ensure our service users see a friendly face daily, but many others don’t have this, so we’re urging people to step-up their contact with the elderly members of their community, but doing it, clearly, at a safe social distance.”
World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy again social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organisation with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
