Take extra care of elderly when clocks change says ISS Healthcare

Published: 4th October 2019 11:02

WELSH folk are being encouraged by a care provider to take extra care of their elderly relatives and neighbours when the clocks go back an hour at the end of this month (October, 2019).

From October 27 the evenings will get darker much earlier, which could impact on the well-being of older people say experts at ISS Healthcare, which has offices at Torfaen Business Centre.

Caroline Jones, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, said: “While the majority of us may only be slightly affected by the darker evenings that come with the clocks going back, there are many elderly people out there who find it extremely tricky, so we’re encouraging the good people of Wales to ensure that any older neighbours, friends or relatives are doing ok.

“The darkness and the bad weather that comes along with this time of year can limit the time elderly people can get out and about and run any errands that they may need to do. The weather can get so bad that they may not be able to get out of the house at all for a day or two, so it’s a good idea to pop in on them a few times during a week to see if there’s anything they need.

“They are also much more susceptible to the cold, so it’s a good idea to make sure they are warm and have plenty of additional blankets to hand and are wearing layers of clothing, should they need it. Sometimes a friendly face is all that someone needs, so simply just popping in to say ‘hello’ and to enjoy a cuppa and a natter is perfect.”

ISS Healthcare provides care support to thousands of people, with services commissioned through authorities in the area or purchased privately by individual service users or their families.

Its aim is to deliver care, which improves the lives of its service users and that treats them, and their families, with respect, dignity and compassion.

ISS Healthcare believes its services should not only comply with regulatory standards, but that it also delivers excellence and promote overall wellbeing.

Caroline continued: We’re looking for kind, committed and carding individuals to care for our service users.

“Being a carer is a really satisfying job and gives people the opportunity to carve a career for themselves.

“Carers who join our team will be able to train to help to provide quality care for our older service users, enabling them to continue living fulfilling lives in the homes they know and love, or provide flexible, person-centred support at home or in the community for people of all ages with all kinds of physical or learning disabilities or mental health needs.

“We also have positions available in our complex care teams, providing bespoke care, sometimes around the clock, to enable people with complex needs to be supported in their own homes, and our reablement care team, who work with people to re-learn skills and rebuild confidence and independence after suffering illness or injury.

“We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week onboarding program in order for them to obtain a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full time and part time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation.”

Anyone interested in a position should call 01495 759977.
